Author Biography:
Lesley Milroy is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. She has published a large number of articles and book chapters on a range of topics in sociolinguistics and several books including: Authority in Language (Third Edition, 1999) and Language and Social Networks (Blackwell, Second Edition, 1987). Matthew Gordon is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Missouri - Columbia. He teaches courses in linguistics and the structure, dialects, and history of the English Language. He is author of Small-Town Values, Big-City Vowels: A Study of the Northern Cities Shift in Michigan (2001).
