Description: A story-based course that introduces young children to English first through listening and speaking, and then provides a gentle introduction to reading and writing.
Key features
Happy House is a two-year course that introduces children to English through listening and speaking and then, in the second level, provides a gentle introduction to the written word.
Happy House introduces children to English through an appealing storyline which combines both familiar contexts and a fantasy world. Children can relate to the characters Polly, Jack, and their baby sister, while also enjoying the adventures of a family of mice that live under the floorboards.
Each unit follows a very clear pattern which gives children confidence and helps them to learn.
The course involves children in a process of language learning which is fun and highly motivating. It includes catchy songs, cognitive puzzles, and colouring and drawing activities. Stickers are used in Level 1 to reinforce vocabulary in an enjoyable way.
NEW – Level 2 provides revision and reinforcement from Level 1, combined with new material to both consolidate and further children's learning as they work with the written word for the first time.
The new Happy House 1 Activity Book offers optional extra activities and cut-outs to complement the Happy House Classbook.
Happy Street can be used after an oral/aural course such as Happy House, or as a first English course which includes reading and writing from the beginning.
The characters from Happy House, Polly and Jack, take young learners outside the context of the house and help them to explore the neighbourhood.
The lively songs and chants have a contemporary feel which add to pupils' enjoyment of the course.
It introduces children to different types of reading text. Speech bubble stories give children the opportunity of acting out the text; 'Colin in Computerland' provides revision and language presentation through an exciting adventure story; and the 'Extended reading' sections include topic-based information, rhymes, and jokes.
Writing skills are systematically built up. Level 1 focuses on writing at a word and sentence level, so that by Level 2 children can express themselves in mini- paragraphs.
Pair work activities and games provide lots of regular speaking practice.

During that time, she became particularly interested in teaching English to young learners. On her return to the UK, she became involved in children's educational publishing. It was later at Oxford University Press that she brought together her experience from both professions to work as an editor on a number of successful primary ELT courses.
