Description: Composing a new anthology of French poetry would be very rash, if this initiative had not here the practical justification and the end of offering the greatest number of people a modest and lasting viaticum: for the youngest, at the age of the first discoveries literary, a brief and stimulating glimpse of the sumptuous domain that awaits them; for others, a discreet reminder of the immortal syllables that enchanted them.
From its medieval origins (Rutebeuf, Villon) until the end of the 19th century (Rimbaud, Laforgue), within the framework of a codified poetic art before the modern adventure of writing freed from all constraint began, the French poetry is represented here by “these verses which sing in the head while the memory is absent” (Verlaine).
