This book is a trilogy of memoirs by children's writer and journalist Evgenia Nikolaevna Fedorova. (1906-1995) The entire trilogy is a vivid account by a former prisoner of life in the prisons, camps, and exile camps of the former Soviet Union, and of the author's encounters in these forbidding places with interesting and noble people during the terrible years of Stalin's rule, during the state terror he instituted, which lasted until his death. In the first book, she recounts the unexpected turn of fate that threw her, then a young woman far removed from politics, into the meat grinder of Stalin's terror, following a friend's denunciation. This happened at its very beginning, in 1935, and only because of this did she survive. The second and third books are dedicated to the lives of people in camps and places of exile, each with its own regime. The trilogy contains a lot of personal information. Its leitmotif is that even in prison camps, a person can, if they so desire, remain human, as long as they have at least some strength left to live. It contains many excursions into the distant past and stories about the fates of people.
