Learning with concepts

Little Blue Dot is based on a learning with concepts methodology to enable young children to learn English while exploring universal concepts. As they work through the three units within each module, the children build progressively on their understanding of the overarching module concept and make connections between the different facts and ideas they have encountered in each unit.

Why use a learning with concepts methodology?

• Young learners develop a deeper, richer understanding of the world around them.
• It helps them to inquire, make discoveries, and develop their own ideas.
• Learners learn to organise their knowledge into broad concepts that offer a much wider and more flexible understanding, helping them to become inquisitive, lifelong learners.
• By learning to apply these concepts through class projects, they are also taught to take autonomous action, make judgements, and develop important global skills.

The global community

The idea that we live in a shared world and must work together to look after it is central to Little Blue Dot. The course aims to help children to connect with the global community as they look for ways to make our planet a healthy place for all, as well as to understand the similarities and differences between ourselves and others.

• Each unit begins with representations of children and families from different communities through videos and photos.
• Story and Value lessons focus on accepting and valuing differences, respecting others, and behaving in a considerate way.
• Explore lessons deal with universal themes of play, friendship and family.

Real-world focus

Little Blue Dot presents the real world through engaging videos and photos that children can relate to. The course also relates to other areas of the curriculum and transfers useful, practical English language to a range of different areas of the curriculum (math, science, art, etc.) wherever they are relevant.
