Description: Discover the lost art of great writing.
Since the invention of writing, the written word has fueled humanity’s astonishing progress. Thus, the ability to write effectively and beautifully has long been revered and rewarded.
And yet in the digital age, people have begun to believe that this talent is somehow obsolete: that writing is something unworthy of study beyond the basic mechanics of vocabulary and syntax and grammar, that mediocre prose is acceptable in a world crying out for clear and precise communication.
The Art of Writing is a series of three books that aims to develop the skills necessary for effective writing at advanced levels. Each book presents and analyses the most commonly used genres at CEFR levels B2,C1 and C2 and most international exam boards divided in sections. Each section starts with a warm-up activity to introduce learners to the concepts of each writing genre (such as emails/letters, stories, essays, letters to the editor, articles, reports, proposals, reviews, etc.) followed by an introduction that presents all the key elements that characterise them. The units that follow, two pages each, contain rubric and model analyses of specific writing tasks as well as Useful notes and tasks that aim to improve learners' writing skills. Each unit ends with a plan that learners can follow when preparing their own pieces of writing. At the end of each section there is a Reflection and Evaluation page that aims to help learners develop self-awareness. Learners reflect on what they have learnt, such as necessary elements to be included in their writing pieces, how they fit together coherently and if language has been used appropriately, in order to evaluate their progress and identify their strengths and weaknesses as well as those of their classmates'. The Introduction for the Teacher explains how teachers can assess learners' writing pieces and how to provide feedback sessions so that problems can be explained and corrected together with the learner (formative assessment).
