The touching story of a hired hand who could not admit her motherhood until the end of her life, the frank confession of a former convict Kyryl, terrifying rural events and the dramatic fate of Princess Katrusia - Shevchenko's first three stories anew reveal to us the world of a person of the first half of the 19th century, her experiences, struggles, dreams and disappointments. Brilliant translations into Ukrainian by renowned masters of the word by Borys Antonenko-Davydovych and Viktor Sapitsky seem to bring Shevchenko closer to our time: his heroes and heroines live, love, suffer and fight, like we do today.
The book "Princess" is a collection of Taras Shevchenko's first three stories, which were written by the Kobzar during the period of exile. Shevchenko's prose works are created on the ideological basis of the writer's poems, they are a testament to the author's pain and suffering, and at the same time - his unwavering faith in the power of the human spirit and truth. A look at the Kobzar's work from the perspective of his prose will reveal to readers unexpected and sometimes much more timeless aspects of the classic's creative output.
Shevchenko's stories combine biographical motifs, personal observations and social considerations of the author. Taras Hryhorovych carefully depicts the everyday life of the village and the customs of the society of that time, which often oppressed people and pushed them to desperate steps.
