Il a hâte de retrouver le calme de la campagne et de rendre visite à son ami, monsieur Corbefin, un chimiste à la retraite. En effet, dans son dernier mail, monsieur Corbefin lui annonce qu’il a découvert quelque chose de très important. Hélas, Alexandre arrive trop tard : le chimiste a été enlevé !
